High school should be the place where we get the basic skills we need in life. It should also be the place where we start to find ourselves and figure out what we want to do for the next 50 years or so. And in some areas, most high school programs do a good job, such as basic math and literacy.

But many people graduate from high school and then spend the next decade slowly realizing how horribly unprepared their high school (or even college) experience left them for real life. There’s a reason the term “adult” has become so intimidating – that’s why so many of us drop out of school and go out into the world only to find that we’ve never been taught some of the fundamental life skills we need to be successful people. It goes beyond basic how-to instructions – sometimes you need more than basic training; you need context and social skills that textbooks don’t have.
