Nissan Recalls 400,000 Old Cars Due to Airbag Problems

Nissan has recalled 404,690 older pickup trucks, SUVs and minivans due to potential safety issues with their airbags. A report from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration states that “the emblem posts may develop cracks over time, and the emblem and holder components may become detached in the event of an airbag deployment.” This means that the emblem could become a projectile if an airbag deploys, creating an increased risk of injury to vehicle occupants.

Which Nissan vehicles are being recalled?

The following Nissan vehicles are subject to the recall:

  • 2008 – 2011 Nissan Frontier (113,313 vehicles)
  • 2008 – 2011 Nissan Titan (75,530 vehicles)
  • 2008 – 2011 Nissan Xterra (72,601 vehicles)
  • 2008–2011 Nissan Pathfinder (70,693 vehicles)
  • 2008 – 2011 Nissan Armada (43,616 vehicles)
  • 2008–2009 Nissan Quest (28,937 vehicles)

Nissan has stated that it is aware of four reported injuries related to the issue. The report shows that the problem began at least as early as 2019, when a lawsuit revealed that a broken 2010 Nissan Titan emblem had contaminant residue on it. The first official report of an injury occurred in January 2022 when a customer reported that he had been injured due to the emblem on the cover of the driver’s airbag module falling off.
