How to Plan a Date for Valentine’s Day If You’re Stuck in a Rut

Planning a date for Valentine’s Day is tricky. You want it to be special, but roses and reservations seem cliché. Stay home and cook dinner together if you like, but if you want to go out and do something a little different this year, we have a few ideas to get you started.

(On the other hand, if you’re a DGAF about romance, we’ve got ideas for you too .)

Create a Date Jar : This is good if you’re both indecisive – you can either do this as an activity with your partner, or you can surprise them with a jar full of your own ideas. As you can see in this TikTok , you will need a jar, a few craft sticks , markers, and simple date ideas that you color-code in various categories such as house dates , going out ideas , affordable dates , expensive dates and dates needed for planning .

Download the official app . This app can help you come up with date ideas based on your location and common interests. Think of it like Tinder, but instead of meeting people, you both choose dating ideas created for your area. Any date idea that both of you like will show up as a “match”. And if you have your own dating ideas in your area, you can share them on the app for other couples to enjoy.

Let someone else have fun: why take all the responsibility for entertainment when there are many people willing to do it for you? Buy tickets to a comedy or improv club, a local concert, play, musical, or basketball game.

Choose fresh air . Winter is often associated with being cooped up, but that can change for a day. Go hiking ( bonus points if you take a good picnic with you ); explore the main street of a nearby town you’ve never been to; go skiing or snowtube; or just build a fire in your backyard and toast marshmallows together.

Gamify your date : If there ever was a day to gamble, it’s probably Valentine’s Day. Of course there is mini golf, bowling, archery and ax throwing. Or, if you’re both competitive, challenge them to a game of racquetball at your gym. The loser then buys the dinner.

Escape from the room – or fury in the room : quests have been popular for several years now (and rightly so – they are a hell of a lot of fun). But if you’ve never heard of the rage room , you’re missing out. As the name suggests, this is basically a room where you can destroy anything in sight. If you’re comfortable with your partner seeing you at the peak of your rage for stress relief, this might be a good time.
