You Can Get $200 Off Your Amtrak Rail Ticket Now

Air travel has been a total mess this holiday season (looking at you Southwest ). Then this week, more than 10,000 flights were delayed and another 1,300 canceled due to a malfunction of the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) system .

If all this has put you off flying for a while, you’re in luck: Amtrak is currently offering its USA Rail Pass for $200 off the regular price for a limited time. Here’s what you need to know.

How to Get $200 Off Your Amtrak USA Rail Pass

In general terms, an Amtrak U.S. rail pass is similar to a car ride in that it involves the use of ground transportation to travel between different locations over a period of time.

Sure, train travel requires a little more planning, some kind of timetable, and being limited to Amtrak services in cities, but it also means not having to stop (and pay for) gas and, perhaps most importantly, be able to sleep en route.

Details

The USA Rail Pass entitles you to 10 travel segments within 30 days between over 500 destinations. A pass normally costs $499, but during the current Amtrak sale, they can be purchased for as little as $299, which works out to roughly $30 per ride.

Naturally, there are many terms and conditions , but if you have a flexible schedule and can make it work, you can see most of the country for a great price. Here’s what to keep in mind:

  • A “travel segment” occurs every time you get on and off a train (or other scheduled Amtrak flights). Thus, if your trip involves one transfer, you will use two segments of your pass.
  • You must use the pass within 120 days from the date of purchase, which is between now and mid-May. Then, once you travel to your first segment, your pass will expire after 30 days.
  • Obviously you will be traveling in bus class.

How and when to buy

You can purchase a USA Rail Pass on the Amtrak website through Friday, January 20th.
