Fix Your Own Wobbly Toilet Seat

If you notice your toilet seat is wobbly, you might think that you need a lot of experience to fix it, but it’s easier than you think to do it yourself. All you need is a few simple tools and some elbow grease. All you need is a screwdriver, an adjustable wrench and some gloves.

First, remove the plastic caps from the hinged part of the seat that cover the hardware that secures the hinges to the toilet. Some of these caps will have tabs that are pushed in to release them, while others will release when pulled. Once they are removed, you may need to clean underneath them before you get to work on the bolts, and if you notice corrosion, it might be time to change the hardware.

How to tighten or replace toilet seat hardware

The main reason a toilet seat will wobble is because the bolts holding it to the toilet have loosened. To fix this, use a screwdriver on the top side and an adjustable wrench on the bottom side of the bolt to tighten it. Before tightening, make sure the washers are in place between the bolts and the seat so that the fastener fits properly and does not have direct contact with the porcelain. If any of these parts are damaged or missing, you can purchase a toilet seat repair kit that includes several sizes of washers and a tightening tool. If the hardware needs to be replaced, you can also get replacement bolts .

How to replace a toilet seat

If tightening bolts or replacing damaged parts doesn’t help, it might be time to replace your toilet seat. If the hinge is broken, it’s time to replace the entire seat. Likewise, if the bolt holes are worn out, it’s time to replace the seat. To do this, select a new seat and then use a screwdriver and wrench to remove the old bolts. The new seat comes with new parts to mount it, and you can use the same tools to install the new seat as you did to remove the old one. Make sure you tighten the bolts tight to avoid jiggling the newly installed seat. Consider opting for a soft close lid to prevent the same problem from happening again.

Use gaskets and check for leaks

Another thing you should check if your toilet seat is wobbly is that it is not the toilet itself that is wobbly. If this is a problem, you should try to fix it as soon as possible because a wobbly toilet can leak from the seal underneath. You can fix this with toilet pads , but you’ll also need to re-grease the base of the toilet. If this is a problem, you should also check the toilet for leaks. If there is a problem with the seal under the toilet flush, it can cause floor problems. Make sure water doesn’t seep onto the floor by adding some food coloring to the water in the toilet and see if it appears around the base of the toilet.
