These Hyundai and Kia Vehicles Are Being Recalled Due to a Sudden Loss of Power

Imagine your car alerting you to a problem and telling you to stop as soon as possible for the next 20-30 seconds before the transmission disengages and your car is unable to move. This is the reality that the 122,000 Hyundai and Kia owners could face at any moment.

Hyundai is expected to recall six models and Kia is expected to recall two models with the same issue. Kia’s statement to Lifehacker about the recall reads in part:

The electric oil pump in an 8-speed dual clutch transmission (DCT) may have an internal failure due to a quality issue with the supplier. As a result, vehicles under test may issue a DTC with warnings and allow normal vehicle movement for 20-30 seconds, followed by a complete loss of traction due to the disengagement of the transmission drive gears. The loss of driving force increases the risk of an accident.

Kia says there have been no reports of deaths, injuries or accidents related to this issue. Hyundai did not respond to Lifehacker’s request for comment.
