How to Extend Your Apple Watch Battery Life While Exercising

If you’re an avid Apple Watch user, you’re probably looking for ways to extend battery life a lot . Apple has made your life a little easier by adding another feature to get the job done.

With watchOS 9.1, you can reduce your heart rate and GPS readings for some workouts, thereby extending the battery life of your Apple Watch. The bottom line is that you must own one of the recently released Apple Watch models to be able to use this feature.

How to Extend Apple Watch Battery Life

If you have an Apple Watch Series 8, Apple Watch SE (2nd generation), or Apple Watch Ultra, you can go to your workout settings to adjust your GPS frequency and heart rate.

By reducing the frequency of these readings, you will get slightly less accurate data. However, it is useful in situations where your watch is about to run out of power. This battery saver feature is available for the Outdoor Walk, Outdoor Run, and Hike workout modes.

It’s a bit confusing that the models that can use this feature the most (older Apple Watch devices with reduced battery life) are excluded from using it. One can only hope that Apple eventually brings it to older Apple Watch models as well.

The release candidate version of watchOS 9.1 is available on the public beta channel right now, which means you can install it right now by registering your watch in Apple’s beta program . Since this is a release candidate, the software should be stable, without the issues you might encounter in beta. However, if you’d rather skip the beta program altogether, you can wait until Apple publicly releases watchOS 9.1 on Monday, October 24th.

Download songs without charging your watch

After installing watchOS 9.1, you can also download Apple Music songs without putting your watch on a charger.

This feature is a little hidden. To access it, open any playlist or album in the Music app. Tap the three dots and choose View Album or View Playlist . Click on the three dots again and select Download .

The first time you do this, your Apple Watch will ask if you want to download music while the watch is charging. Scroll down with the Digital Crown and select Download Now . This makes downloading songs to Apple Watch much more convenient.

It’s also worth noting that watchOS 9.1 brings the Matter smart home standard to your Apple Watch. If you have many smart home devices, those that support the Matter standard will be able to communicate with each other more easily. This means you can use your Apple Watch to control smart home devices from other brands.
