How to Tell If a Detergent Is Really “mild” Before You Buy It

If your web browsing history is littered with questions about how to clean various surfaces and objects, you’ve probably noticed that many instructions and manuals recommend using a mild detergent or dishwashing liquid. It’s one of those terms we see so often, but when pressed, it can be difficult to pinpoint exactly what makes a cleanser “soft.”

And while we’re on the subject of terminology, we should note that when we talk about “detergent” it’s in a general sense (according to Merriam-Webster : “detergent”), not anything specific to laundry. Either way, here’s how to tell if a cleanser is truly “mild.”

What is a “mild” detergent or soap?

There are no formal definitions or recommendations as to what constitutes a “mild” detergent or soap, but generally speaking, it is something that most people should be able to come into contact with (during cleaning) with their bare hands and not experience skin irritation.

Harsh chemicals that cause a reaction on our skin are also not suitable for cleaning delicate or easily damaged surfaces. In addition, many of them are harmful to the environment.

How to tell if a detergent or soap is “mild”

The strong chemical cleaning compounds found in heavy-duty (i.e., not mild) detergents and soaps are called “power additives” and they enhance the cleaning agent’s action by softening the water, raising its pH, and breaking down dirt and oil particles. .

The best way to determine if a detergent, soap, or other cleaner can be considered “mild” is to check the ingredient list for known ingredients. Some of the most common include :

  • Phosphates: Often referred to as sodium tripolyphosphate (STPP).
  • Sodium carbonate (soda ash): used as a water softener.
  • Sodium silicate: prevents corrosion.
  • Sodium aluminosilicates : A type of zeolite that removes calcium and magnesium ions.
  • Citric acid : an alternative to phosphates

In this case, you don’t just need to read the front of the label before purchasing the cleaning product – important information about whether it contains harsh chemicals will be on the ingredient list on the back.
