All Android Apps That Can Use “Material You” Icons

Material You is one of the great latest Android features. Introduced in Android 12 , it automatically adjusts your smartphone’s user interface elements based on the wallpaper you choose. For example, if an image is predominantly green and black, the UI elements will update to reflect those colors. This is a simple yet effective idea that makes your phone’s design elements come together. App icons are obviously part of the Android user interface and hence they also change based on your wallpaper. However, as of Android 12, only certain apps were compatible with this feature, and it varied depending on your phone. For example, if you had a Pixel running Android 12, only Google apps could change along with the system theme. Gmail and YouTube will visually sync with your wallpaper, making any other app even more visible. Samsung users faced the same issue on Galaxy devices.

Design purists, don’t get hung up anymore: In Android 13 , Google has finally extended support for Material You app icons to third-party apps. As long as your favorite apps support Material You and the feature is enabled in your Settings app, you’ll see the icons adjust to match your wallpaper and system theme. Ben Shun of 9to5Google has a current list of supported apps , which includes highlights like Telegram, WhatsApp, Reddit, Signal, LinkedIn, and Bitwarden. Here’s where the current list is:

According to 9to5Google, almost all Google apps currently support Material You. Notable exceptions currently include Stadia, Play Games, and YouTube Studio.

Android 13 is fairly new and not yet available on many devices. As developers work on new software, and as it hits more smartphones, it’s likely that this list will expand (if not explode) with compatible apps – we’re still missing a lot of big players. including Instagram, Snapchat, TikTok, Netflix and Spotify.

Note that Android 13 is still in beta on Samsung devices as One UI 5.0, so Galaxy users can’t use Material You’s third-party app icons at this time. And while most Samsung apps are currently supported, Google apps are not .
