What’s New on Disney+ in October 2022
After about 30 films and 16 TV shows (depending on how you count them), I’m numb to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. I’m not a snob and I still think movies are fun and lore is interesting – it’s just hard for me to care about really keeping up. I think Disney is aware of this, which is why they keep trying to push the franchise into new and weirder territories with the ultra-meta WandaVision and She -Hulk romantic comedy energy. It was only a matter of time before they tried full horror (despite the Multiverse of Madness and the ill-fated New Mutants ). And what better time to do that than during the height of the Spooky Season?
On October 7, Disney+ will release Werewolf by Night , which is based on stories with an obscure minor character in comic book canon that Wikipedia and several comic book sites assure me, indeed is. Gael Garcia Bernal plays Jack Russell, who has difficulty controlling his animal instincts; Laura Donnelly and Harriet Samson Harris are among the character actors playing monster hunters hunting him down as they fight for control of some magical relic. Sure, sure, that’s good, but I’m here to reminisce about vintage black and white horror vibes:
Fans of the franchise are also waiting for you: Tales of the Jedi (October 26), a collection of Star Wars animated shorts in the tradition of last year’s anime-inspired Star Wars: Visions . With an art style reminiscent of the Clone Wars television series, the six mini-movies promise to delve into hitherto unexplored corners of the canon, including the rise of Count Dooku, everyone’s favorite octogenarian Sith Lord.
Here’s everything else coming to the streamer in October, including the return of the quirky children’s series The Secret Society of Benedict (October 26), based on popular novels.
