You Can Update Your PS5 Controller With a Windows PC

Is your PS5 controller acting up? Updating the firmware for your DualSense controller can quickly resolve many minor issues. If you have a PS5, it’s easy to upgrade the controller by connecting it to your console. However, if you don’t have a console—perhaps because you’re using a controller to play PC games—you can use a Windows PC to get the job done. (It’s also a great option for those rare occasions when a controller refuses to update on your PS5.)

How to update the DualSense PS5 controller via Windows

First, use the USB cable to connect the controller to the computer. Next, you should download Sony’s DualSense Firmware Updater . This link will take you to the support page where you can scroll down and click the blue Download button.

Once you have downloaded and installed the DualSense Firmware Update Tool on your computer, launch the program and follow the on-screen instructions. From here, your DualSense controller will refresh in a few seconds.

Do not turn off your computer or disconnect the USB cable while updating the firmware. Ideally, you should leave the controller on a flat surface during the update – if you hold it or fiddle with it during the update, the controller may lose connection to your PC, especially if the USB cable you use to connect the two devices is loose and this can cause problems.

Once the update is complete, your controller will be ready to use. If you’re using it with a console, you won’t need to update it separately on PS5. Enjoy a (hopefully) improved experience, at least until a new firmware update becomes available.
