How to Keep Your Car Running in Extreme Heat

Those who live in places with cold winters know that the weather can take a toll on your car. In fact, temperature alone can affect everything from tire pressure to how long a battery lasts , and yes, that includes hot weather. Here are a few ways to keep your car running in extreme heat from the experts at the American Automobile Association (AAA).

How to prepare your car for extreme heat

According to Scott Verbraken, vice president of automotive services at AAA: Auto Club Group , extreme heat is the main reason for the high number of calls AAA receives from stranded motorists this time of year. “The two most common problems drivers face are flat tires and dead batteries,” he said in a statement to AAA.

Here’s what to do to avoid flat tires, dead batteries, and other traffic accidents:

Check your battery

According to the AAA , most car batteries last between three and five years. If you haven’t checked your battery in a while, now is the time to do so, especially because extreme heat can cause your battery to drain faster.

Check tire pressure

In summer , AAA recommends checking tire pressure once a month and before long trips. The manufacturer’s tire pressure specifications are found on a sticker usually found on the door jamb.

Inflate tires accordingly. Riding on under-inflated tires not only wastes gas and causes overheating, but according to the AAA, it also increases your chances of a blowout.

Check tire tread depth

While you’re there, use a quarter to check the tire tread. Also look out for any signs of uneven wear, as this could indicate inflation, suspension, or alignment issues.

Top up fluids if necessary

Now is also a good time to check your fluids to make sure your car can run at its best and reduce the chance of it overheating. These fluids include engine oil, transmission fluid, power steering fluid, and brake fluid. Refer to the owner’s manual for the correct amount of each fluid and top up if necessary.
