What’s New in Prime Video in July 2022
After a harrowing development process that included several failed films and more than a few false starts as a TV series, Y: The Last Man premiered on Hulu, finally bringing acclaimed comics writer Brian Q. Vaughan’s post-apocalyptic opus to the small screen. It was immediately canceled before the first season had finished airing . Let’s hope things go better this time around as Amazon Prime Video debuts its Paper Girls series on Won and artist Cliff Chang on July 29.
Aside from a short teaser, we don’t have much to say about the footage yet, but this adaptation at least happened faster. Amazon first acquired the project in 2019 and ordered its direct mass production in 2020 . The appeal is clear: Set in the 1980s, it follows four young teenage girls caught up in a breathtaking sci-fi mystery that exudes a Stranger Things vibe and is based on award-winning source material.
Also coming out this month is a TV show less directly aimed at my nerdy ’80s kids demo, The Terminal List (July 1) , a big-budget war thriller starring Chris Pratt as a former Navy SEAL investigating a conspiracy. The series is based on a series of novels by Jack Carr. Prime Video also produces some cute original films. In Don’t Make Me Go (July 15), John Cho plays a father with a serious illness who decides to take his teenage daughter on one last trip to make sure she has good memories of her time with him (sobs). Anything Is Possible (July 22), directed by Billy Porter (known as ” Pose “), focuses on the nascent relationship between a teenage transgender girl and a cute boy from her school.
