Throw Away Those Recalled Jif Peanut Butters ‘immediately’ Says FDA

Peanut butter has long been a staple in American wardrobes. In fact, there’s a good chance you have them in your kitchen right now. If so, take a moment and check the label: it may be included in a nationwide recall of 49 Jif-branded peanut butter products, fueled by concerns that it was responsible for a salmonella outbreak that has sickened at least 14 people in the US. Why is Jif peanut butter being recalled?

JM Smucker, in collaboration with the FDA, has issued a voluntary recall of 49 Jif peanut butter products due to concerns about potential salmonella contamination. As of May 1, 2022, 14 illnesses have been reported in 12 states, including two hospitalizations that have been linked to certain Jif peanut butter products manufactured at the JM Smucker Company facility in Lexington, Kentucky, according to the FDA .

Which Jif peanut butter products are subject to the recall?

The recalled Jif peanut butter has been distributed nationwide in retail stores and other outlets, the FDA said. The products included in the recall have UPC codes from 1274425 to 2140425 and they all end in 425. The codes can be found on the Jif labels next to the expiration date. Speaking of which, Jif peanut butter has a two-year shelf life , so even if you bought yours some time ago, it could be part of the recall.

What to do if you bought recalled peanut butter

According to the FDA, anyone with recalled Jif peanut butter products ” should wash and disinfect surfaces and utensils that may have touched the peanut butter” and ” dispose of it immediately .” A message on Jif’s website states that the company is “committed to making amends to affected consumers” and anyone with questions or who would like to report adverse reactions is invited to visit www.jif.com/contact-us .
