Who Knew You Could Turn Off a Family Member’s IPhone Alarm?

If you live with other people, you will definitely come across unwanted iPhone alarm clock. Maybe they are fast asleep because of the squeals, or they left their device and forgot to turn off the alarm. Either way, the alarm goes off in another room, and it’s up to you to get up and turn it off. Or that?

To the surprise of many, it turns out that you can disable other people’s alarms with your own iPhone, as long as those people are part of your Family Sharing account . Family Sharing lets you and up to five other people share services like Apple Music and Apple TV+, and find family members’ missing devices. If you live with random roommates, you probably aren’t part of the same Family Sharing space and won’t be able to use this trick. But many of us live with family members or close friends who use this program, so many of us might try it.

There are two other caveats here: both of your iPhones must be connected to the same Wi-Fi network, and the other iPhone must have a name that Siri will understand. If all three conditions are met, you should be able to turn off your family members’ iPhone alarms from any room in the house.

How to turn off the alarm on someone else’s iPhone

The next time someone in your Family Sharing plan has their iPhone alarm going off indefinitely, activate Siri on your iPhone and say “Turn off (person’s name) iPhone alarm.” Siri will then present you with a prompt asking if you want to turn off the alarm. Select “Yes” and you should hear that the alarm has gone off.

If you’re thinking “how the hell didn’t I know about this”, you’re not alone – I’m not sure if anyone outside of Apple knew about this feature until this week. Even the Reddit user who first shared the feature figured it out by accident: They heard their wife’s alarm go off and jokingly asked Siri on their iPhone to turn it off. Obviously it worked because we’re here, but it’s kind of funny that we’re still finding iPhone features by accident. Does Apple even know this feature exists?
