Update Your Pixel Now to Fix These Errors

The Google security patch for Android 12 for the month of May is here. If you have a Pixel 3a, Pixel 4, Pixel 4a, Pixel 4a 5G, Pixel 5, Pixel 5a, Pixel 6, and Pixel 6 Pro (including any XL variants), you should see this update soon. While it’s called a security patch, the update doesn’t just fix security flaws; it also resolves these three errors you may have encountered.

Let’s start with crushed bugs (may they rest in peace). This time, the May security patch includes fixes for just three of them, affecting your Pixel’s display and graphics, sensors, and user interface:

  • Display/Graphics: Fixed an issue where the display would sometimes wake up without user intervention.
  • Sensors: Improvements to haptic feedback under certain conditions and use cases (Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro only).
  • User Interface: Fixed an issue that caused the launcher to crash after restarting the device under certain conditions.

If you notice that the display starts up without your intervention, this should stop after this update. Similarly, haptic feedback on the Pixel 6 and 6 Pro should now work better than before, and your Pixel’s launcher should be more stable.

That’s all for the bug department. Before you run to Google complaining about other bugs in your Pixel that this update won’t solve, don’t worry: according to 9to5Google , next month’s update, Android 12 QPR3 should come with a bunch of bug fixes.

However, you should still install the May security patch even if you don’t want to fix any of the three bugs listed here. According to patches dated May 1, 2022 and May 5, 2022, Google fixed 37 vulnerabilities in total. Notably, the security patch contains a fix for the Dirty Pipe vulnerability, which could potentially allow hackers to control your phone by running malicious code through apps that request access to your phone’s files.

Fortunately, none of these vulnerabilities appear to be actively exploited, not even Dirty Pipe, so installing a patch is not as urgent as if the hackers knew how to exploit the vulnerabilities. However, there have been examples of how Dirty Pipe could have been exploited, so it’s likely only a matter of time before hackers decide to look for a vulnerability.

Despite this, it is recommended to keep your device up to date with the latest security patches; you don’t want to put your data or privacy at risk because you didn’t bother to update. To check for a new update, go to Settings > System > System Update .
