What’s New at Paramount+ in May 2022
Paramount keeps rebooting Star Trek and I keep coming back hoping that what they’re trying to do now will be as successful as The Next Generation was in the 90s (I’m very old). Strange New Worlds is the last try and I’ll be damned if the trailer doesn’t show they finally got it right. Star Trek is a franchise – and I say this as a longtime fan – that has always struggled to target a bigger audience than the fans who already love Star Trek . The J.J. Abrams reboot films are fun and flashy special effects games, but they’re more like Marvel action films than stories based on the ideas that fueled the best episodes of various classic series. To me, Discovery and Picard seemed to be wasting too much energy chasing Prestige TV hype and creating Game of Thrones-level lore. I like a lot about them both, but it’s not what I’m looking for from a Star Trek episode.
When will Star Trek: Stranger New Worlds premiere at Paramount+?
It looks like Stranger New Worlds will finally find the right balance when it premieres on May 5th. The trailer promises to take us back to the earliest flights of the USS Enterprise , commanded by Captain Pike (Anson Mount, who has hair as cool as Shatner). probably finds it personally offensive). He looks mission-focused, bright and cheerful (instead of serious and brooding), and Rebecca Romjin becomes first officer, fulfilling a promise made in the unaired Star Trek: TOS pilot years ago. I’m on board.
Also coming to the streamer this month: the first season of Joe Pickett , which appears to be the highest-rated Spectrum Originals series ever, whatever Spectrum Originals is. The adaptation of CJ Box’s top-selling novels has been renewed for a second season, so now’s your chance to catch up (while you figure out what Spectrum Original is to watch season two live).
