How Much Time Is Too Long to Spend on the Machine at the Gym?

If you’re new to the gym, we’ve got a whole guide to the basic, possibly embarrassing questions you might have in your head . But today we’re going to focus on one of the most common things to think about: how much time can you spend on a car?

How much time do people spend on cardio equipment?

A good rule of thumb is that you should try not to spend more than 30 minutes on a cardio machine (such as a treadmill, elliptical machine, or exercise bike) if all the machines are busy and people are waiting. In some gyms, this is a de facto rule and not just a recommendation. Pay attention to any signs posted around the cardio zone to see if you have to jump after a certain time. However, if there are many open treadmills and no published rules, you can stay on yours for as long as you like.

In terms of etiquette, the time spent behind the car is never too little. Some people like to ride their bike for five minutes as a warm-up before moving on to weight lifting or other exercise.

If you want to know how long you should exercise, the recommendations recommend at least 150 minutes of moderate exercise (such as walking or light jogging) or 75 minutes of vigorous exercise (heavy, sweaty things) weekly. So focus on the results for the week, not just one session.

How much time do people spend on weight machines?

Strength training is measured in sets and reps , not total time. If you want a very simple guideline of what people expect to see in the gym, they usually do the following:

  • 5 to 15 repetitions of the exercise
  • This is followed by a rest of 1 to 5 minutes.
  • And then repeat for 3 or more sets.

Heavy exercises that involve more muscles tend to require more rest. Someone who uses a bicep machine will probably only rest a minute between sets; someone who uses the leg press may need closer to five.

During this rest time you can just wait by car. If you want to be very polite, look around to see if anyone is waiting for you to finish. If yes, ask if they would like to “work” (in turn) with you. Another way to be active in a sentence is to stand next to the car instead of sitting on it. If someone comes up, let them know you’re looking forward to the next set, but be happy to let them work.
