What’s New on HBO Max in April 2022?

April is nostalgia month on HBO Max, with the streamer unveiling two new crime dramas that seem to be seeking to bring back grit, style, and cultural relevance… a couple of old crime dramas.

First, TokyoPD (April 7), which has a title and a trailer that made me think of the 1980s cult cop drama Miami Vice even before I knew that this vintage show’s creator, Michael Mann , was brought on board to direct the pilot (he was behind the camera for the first time since Blackhat ‘s ill-fated 2015 flop ) and became an executive producer. The cast includes Oscar nominees Ken Watanabe and Rinko Kikuchi, somewhat offsetting the fact that it stars Ansel Elgort in the title role. It’s a Michael Mann production, so it looks pretty darn slick and classy.

Another throwback is We Own This City (April 25), also based on the non-fiction book by Baltimore Sunreporter Justin Fenton, which delved into a dark saga of corruption within the Baltimore Police Department’s Weapons Tracking Task Force that ended with eight officers being killed. . convicted of bribery and fraud in 2017.
