What’s New on Netflix in April 2022

In my opinion, Russian Doll is one of the best original series Netflix has ever made: a beautifully crafted miniseries gem built around one of my favorite artistic techniques ( the time loop rule ) and cemented with a compelling return of the star/writer/co-creator Natasha Lyon. In six short episodes, the show tells the perfect sci-fi fable about how hard it is to change your bad habits and how to free yourself to finally separate yourself from your worst impulses. The last thing I wanted when the credits rolled was a second season, which could ruin everything. But the second season is still coming out – 4/20, which is quite appropriate. Well, that was three years ago and a lot has changed since then. (Cough.) And, surprisingly, I’m very happy to see how the show manages to continue the story in the future. I still think the first season will be hard to beat – perhaps a series about someone trapped in an endlessly repeating day will be a little different after the pandemic – but it seems likely that time has since given the creative team the best chance of getting it. right. Optimism, what a concept!

Other highlights this month: The final episodes of ” Ozark ” and ” Grace and Frankie ” (both April 29); Choose or Die (April 15), a funny-sounding Netflix Original that features a mysterious vintage video game; documentaries about Elon Musk flying into space (April 7) and the collapse of the once ubiquitous retail brand Abercrombie & Fitch (April 19), as well as a new comedy special from David Spade (April 26).
