16 Super Grimdark Movies That Are Not Batman

It may be a reflection of the state of the world (or our perception of it), but many of the most popular genre films of the last decade or more have been relentlessly dark and gritty. Particularly when it comes to superheroes (and especially Batman, whose films have only become more gritty in recent decades), sullenness is even seen as a measure of quality – fair or not. Happy endings are great and all, but we’re obsessed with genre films that aren’t just dark, but wildly, operatic dark.

At their best, these films show us a world that may not quite match our everyday experience, but perhaps not far from seeing life as we might see it in our darkest fantasies, in our darkest hours. night. On the other hand, some seem to reflect a heightened teenage sense of drama.
