Use This Free App to Extend Your MacBook’s Battery Life
Modern MacBooks have exceptional battery life, but like most batteries, they wear out over time. About a year after you bought your MacBook, its battery starts to show some performance issues and its ability to hold a charge decreases as you use it. There is little you can do to stop this process, but there is an app that can help reduce the rate at which your MacBook’s battery drains.
The AlDente Free Tier allows you to set both a lower and upper limit on how much your MacBook can charge. If you set these limits between 20% and 80%, you will be able to keep your MacBook battery healthy for much longer. You can also make your MacBook run on battery even if it’s plugged into a charger. Whenever your MacBook hits the 80 percent mark, AlDente will switch it to battery power until it hits the lower charging limit.
Please note that AlDente does not support all MacBook models. It works best with M1 series MacBooks that use Apple’s own processors. It also supports select Intel-based MacBook models as long as they’re running macOS Big Sur or newer. The full list of supported MacBooks ishere .
If your MacBook is not supported, you will still be able to run AlDente in its “Intel mode” as long as you’re running an OS version supported by the app. Intel mode uses a different method to limit battery life, and it works even if you’re running Windows through BootCamp.
However, some of AlDente’s best features are available in paid tiers. The app can stop your MacBook from charging when the battery is too hot. Batteries are known to drain much faster at high temperatures and AlDente can prevent them from charging until the battery cools down. The app also ensures that the battery calibration stays the same by fully charging it from time to time. This ensures that your MacBook continues to display accurate battery percentages in the menu bar.
The paid version of this app also gives you more customization options. You can stop charging your laptop when it’s in sleep mode, and you’ll get access to real-time status icons that let you quickly check your current charge level.
AlDente’s free tier is good enough for most people; you can decide if the paid features are worth the $22 asking price for a permanent license or the $10 annual subscription fee. The app is also available through the Setapp subscription package, which allows you to use over 100 apps for $10 per month.
