The Dropout: What is the story behind Theranos?
You may have heard that Theranos’ name has been in the news recently since founder Elizabeth Holmes was convicted of fraud in a US court in January. Dropout explores how things got to this point.
Here’s what the synopsis tells us:
Money. Romance. Tragedy. Deception. From Executive Producer Elizabeth Meriwether , Dropout is the story of Elizabeth Holmes and Theranos, an incredible tale of ambition and fame gone wrong. How did the youngest self-made billionaire in the world lose everything in the blink of an eye?
If you want a little more , Elizabeth Holmes was the CEO of medical technology company Theranos. She famously dropped out of Stanford to pursue her dreams of a revolutionary way to do blood tests.
It looks like Theranos is developing a new technology that only requires a small amount of blood to perform a blood test. It was a revolutionary idea that became widespread and turned Holmes into one of the most popular young CEOs.
Everything came crashing down when reporters did some digging and found that Theranos’ tests barely used their famous new blood test technology. Fraud lawsuits followed, with a trial taking place earlier this year.

Who is playing who?
Amanda Seyfried took on the lead role of Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes.
Naveen Andrews takes on the role of her COO Sunny Balwani, who has also been charged in the lawsuit.
Guest stars on the series include Utkarsh Ambudkar, Kate Burton, Stephen Fry, Michelle Gill, Lisa Gay Hamilton, William H. Macy, Elizabeth Marvel, Laurie Metcalfe, Dylan Minnette, Alan Ruck, Sam Waterson and Michael Watkins.
The series is executive produced by Elizabeth Meriwether ( New Girl ) along with Liz Hannah, Katherine Pope, Rebecca Jarvis, Victoria Thompson and Taylor Dunn. Michael Showalter (The Big Sick) is also an EP and has directed several episodes of the series.

In the US, the series is on Hulu . The first three episodes aired on March 3, with the rest airing weekly.
