What’s New on Disney+ in March 2022

The first time Disney+ unveiled a new Pixar movie that never hit theaters, it seemed like a much-needed pandemic holiday gift, and the streaming-only release of Soul certainly didn’t stop it from winning the Oscar for Best Animated Feature. But when Luka immediately started streaming the following summer, it felt a bit like an insult, especially after Raya and the Last Dragon received a full theatrical release, and even more so when a call from a Disney investor announced Pixar’s next release, Turning Red . , which will appear on Disney+ on March 11 , did the same. Did Disney reclassify Pixar movies as unworthy to be shown in theaters?

Why is Disney releasing movies for streaming and not for theaters?

Turns out they were just working on a dataset that we didn’t have access to at the time. Given that Nielson’s audience-tracking stats showed that Luca was the most watched movie of 2021 , it seems like Pixar movies are far more valuable to the company as a key element of the Disney+ service, because why force someone to pay you money? for tickets once (and give half of that to theater owners), when can you convince them to pay a monthly fee to view your content forever? Also, I like not to go through the Herculean effort to bring my kids to the theater for the privilege of paying $16 a ticket, so maybe that’s a good plan after all. And at least we can all agree on what to watch on the day that an adorable movie about a little girl who can’t stop transforming into an even more adorable giant red panda hits Disney+.

In other stories about people turning into things uncontrollably, this month will also (hardly) see the launch of Moon Knight (March 30), Marvel’s next series. Oscar Isaac enters the MCU as a mercenary soldier who, through comic book shenanigans, becomes the host of an ancient Egyptian god whose spirit turns him into a vigilante anti-hero. The trailer promises a tougher edge than Loki or Hawkeye , with more violence and a plot that hinges on the protagonist’s possible dissociative personality disorder. But why am I telling you this? You already know if you will watch it.

Here’s everything else you can expect on Disney+ in March, including the streaming premiere of Steven Spielberg’s critically adored, Oscar-nominated and overlooked remake of West Side Story (March 2) and a documentary on the making of Olivia Rodrigo’s first album. , SOUR (March 25).
