Stop Using These Recalled Deodorant Sprays Containing Cancer-Causing Chemicals, Says FDA

It’s been a tough few months for some of the biggest manufacturers of health and beauty products, especially in aerosol spray form. First, Procter & Gamble (P&G) voluntarily recalled a number of its aerosol antiperspirants in November, and repeated a similar recall of aerosol hair products a month later.

This time it’s the aerosol spray maker Sure and Brut, which recently announced a voluntary recall of a number of its products, according to a statement from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). As P&G recalls, this is due to a cancer-causing chemical called benzene, which is found in sprays. Here’s what you need to know.

What is included in the review

Although HRB Brands, the company behind Sure and Brut, says that benzene is not in any of their recalled products, an internal review found that unexpected levels of a carcinogen were found in the propellant spraying the product from the can. HRB Brands also notes that all recalled products were owned and distributed by Helen of Troy Limited prior to June 7, 2021.

To date, there have been no reports of illness or other adverse events associated with the products included in the recall, which HRB Brands says was released “out of precaution.”

All recalled products have an expiration date no later than August 2023 and include the following aerosol deodorants and antiperspirants:

  • Brut Classic Antiperspirant Spray (4 oz) (UPC 00827755070085)
  • Brut Classic Antiperspirant Spray (6 oz) (UPC 000827755070108)
  • Brut Classic Aerosol Deodorant (10.0 oz) (UPC 00827755070047)
  • Brut Classic Deodorant Aerosol (154g) (UPC 00827755070177) [*Sold in Canada only]
  • Sure Regular Antiperspirant Spray (6.0 oz) (UPC 00883484002025)
  • Sure Antiperspirant Spray Unscented (6.0 oz) (UPC 00883484002278)

What to do if you have recalled goods

If you check the label of Sure or Brut sprays and find that they are included in a recall, stop using them immediately. But if you plan on requesting a refund for it, take a photo of the bottom of each jar, as well as its barcode, to make sure you have the information you need to complete the return request form . Then you can throw it away.

You can also contact the manufacturer directly by calling 1-866-615-0976 Monday through Friday 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM Pacific Time.
