You Can Play Switch With PS5, Xbox and Other “unsupported” Controllers

The Nintendo Switch offers multiple play styles, which is the benefit of a console/handheld hybrid. You can play in dock and TV connection mode, and portable in handheld or tabletop modes. The switch also supports a range of OEM and third-party controller options. These options make it easy to find the right setup, but what if you want to play Nintendo Switch games with a PlayStation 4 or 5 controller or an Xbox controller? You may well.

Theoretically, this should be impossible. Sony and Microsoft use different input drivers than what the Switch normally supports. However, if you’re willing to pay a few bucks, there’s a way to get a PlayStation or Xbox controller to sync your Nintendo Switch with minimal effort.

In order to connect a PlayStation or Xbox controller to a Nintendo Switch, you will need a third party accessory called the Mayflash Magic NS . This tiny wireless USB dongle plugs right into the Switch’s dock, or you can daisy-chain it into the Switch’s USB-C port with the included USB dongle when playing on a portable device. Two versions of the device are available: Magic NS 1 ( $20 on Amazon ) and Magic NS 2 ( $22 on Amazon ). Either one offers built-in support for numerous controller APIs, including DInput, XInput, and more. PlayStation 3, 4, and 5 controllers (along with a range of other gamepads) work with both models, but Xbox controllers only work with Magic NS 2.

Of course, there are some compromises. Some controller-specific features, such as the PS5’s DualSense haptic triggers, will not work with the Switch as Switch games are not built with these technologies in mind. However, motion and gyroscope control should work on controllers that offer it.

Using a non-Switch controller for Switch games can also be disorienting if you’re used to the usual PS5 and Xbox button mapping. While you can set up a universal Switch button mapping configuration under System Settings > Controllers & Sensors > Change Button Mapping , the button icons in the game will obviously not match your non-Switch controller, which adds an extra layer of confusion . But aside from potential button confusion, setup is simple.

Not all third-party controllers require Magic NS and some others won’t work with a dongle, but this is a handy solution for those who want to play their Switch using their preferred controller. Speaking of which, we can also help you connect your PlayStation 5 or Xbox controller to your PC .
