10 Reasons to Buy a 3DS in 2022

For a long time, the Nintendo generation meant one console and one portable computer. Game Boy along with NES. Game Boy Advance next to GameCube. Nintendo DS and Wii. With the Switch, Nintendo combined the console and handheld into one, seemingly eliminating the need for the traditional Nintendo mobile system. But the company’s latest true portable, the 3DS, is still worth considering even in 2022. If you don’t have it, you must buy it.

The 3DS, like the Wii U , holds a special place in my heart as a Nintendo fan. I was SO excited when the system was announced back in 2010. On-screen 3D sounded cool (and also impossible), but there were three things I cared about the most; analog circular panel, widescreen display and improved graphics compared to the Nintendo DS.

When the system was launched the following year, things did not look so rosy. The 3DS itself was amazing; the apps included out of the box were fun tech demos that showcased 3D effects, AR (Face Raiders, anyone?) and other new bells and whistles. However, apart from the incredible Ocarina of Time remake, the library was pathetic. Nintendo sold so few things at launch that those of us who spent the hefty $250 entry fee were rewarded as “Nintendo Ambassadors” with access to a small collection of GBA and NES virtual games.

Of course, the story didn’t end there. When the games began to be released, fans joined in. Sales skyrocketed, and when Nintendo released several different 3DS models, it was able to lift the sinking ship, eventually moving around 75 million items. Handhelds are out of production these days, but both the system and its games deserve to be played, even after 5 years of Switch rule. That’s why you should totally get one.
