How to Make a Cheap DIY Canopy Bed

Canopy beds can make your bedroom romantic, calm and peaceful. But the canopy beds themselves are expensive. You can get the look and feel of a canopy, but at no cost. Just make your own.

What You Will Need for a Canopy Bed

For these projects, you will need a tape measure, a screwdriver, and a nail finder. And since screwing into the plaster of the overhead ceiling can cause particles to get into your eyes, you should also wear safety goggles.

Make a canopy from an embroidery hoop

For a round drapery effect, use sheer curtains and a large embroidery hoop . To hang this canopy, screw pot hooks to three points on the ceiling 24 inches apart. Open the hoop, put the curtains on the outer hoop and assemble them again. Then hang the hoop on the hooks on the potty rack and hang the curtains around the bed.

Attach curtain rods above the bed

For a more curved look, you can use a ceiling curtain rod and an eyelet curtain set or a shower curtain. Install the rail above the bed using the provided hardware and then hang the curtains on it. It also allows you to flip the canopy down whenever you want.

Use curtain rods around the bed

Straight rods can also be attached to the ceiling and matched to each side of the bed for a closed canopy effect. Attach drywall anchors and screws to the ceiling, then add curtain rods to them. Using the right equipment will help prevent them from rattling or falling off.

Use the eaves panel method

To hang curtains along the head or foot of the bed, you only need two ceiling rods. Simply slide the panel through one rod and then drape it over the other. This design can also be used on each side of the bed to drape up and down, with the exception that you will need to thread a panel of curtains through each rod and overlap them over the bed. This method is best for bright prints and fewer creases.

Use Industrial Canopy Pipe

Using pipe and flanges is also a way to add a canopy to your industrial style bed. For this method, you either need to cut the pipes to size or buy pre-cut pipes to fit your bed. Use a flange in each corner and a double-sided right angle in each corner. Hanging the pipes will go more smoothly if you assemble them on the floor first. Once your flanges are screwed into the ceiling, slide the curtains over the pipes and screw the pipes in.

For each of these uses, use a nail finder to check the ceiling beams to make sure your screws are screwing into the hard material. Be sure to read the packaging with your materials, in particular, check the weight limits on the fittings so that your dome does not collapse on you.
