Stop Using Round Measuring Spoons

I don’t tend to recommend products or write reviews. With the exception of hugely popular household appliances like the airfryer and instant pot , I try to keep my recipes independent of any one piece of equipment, and my own kitchen is stocked with things I inherited or bought from Goodwill or a restaurant. supply store , as a rule, without studying what I was buying.

For some reason, I like to deny myself things that would make my life easier, especially if I already have a crappier version of the thing. I hate my measuring spoons that I’ve had for decades, but I still haven’t replaced them with spoons that I knew would bring me joy and make cooking more enjoyable.

But not more.

You see, all the measuring spoons in my cutlery drawer are wide and round. That’s fine, as long as I don’t need to measure out a spice or other seasoning that’s in a tiny jar that doesn’t fit those wide round spoons. To solve this problem, I have to use a different, thinner spoon, which often results in the spices spilling onto the countertop. It’s infuriating! Well, relatively annoying. But nevertheless, annoying.

However, at the time of this writing, I ordered a set of thin oblong measuring spoons. They should be here by the time this blog goes live, or shortly thereafter. I’m in awe of my future self and a little jealous of her shiny new spoons that will fit in all of her spice jars, no matter their size, even though I’ll be one soon.

If you live in a household with round measuring spoons, I highly recommend supplementing or replacing the round spoons with a set of oblong ones. They are easy to find. Amazon sells plenty of them, as do Bed Bath & Beyond , Williams-Sonoma , and King Arthur Baking (including those pictured above). These spoons can be purchased for around $10-$20—a small price to pay for easy access to precisely measured spices.
