How to Hide the Fact That Your Cat Is Pooping in a Box in Your House

Cats make every home better – that’s an undeniable fact. But with every cat comes an unsightly litter box (or two) and the age-old puzzle of where to store it. Of course, you can buy a piece of furniture like this “storage bench” that is specifically designed to hide the litter box and give your feline some privacy, or you can save your money and disguise it with one of these items. instead simple and smart DIY methods.

Repurpose cabinet

As with the aforementioned storage bench, this suggestion from Homebody House forces us to repurpose the closet. Mount the cat door on the side of an empty cabinet, place the tray inside on the bottom shelf, and use the top shelf for supplies like scoops, extra litter, and plastic bags. When you need to empty the box, just open the front door for quick access.

You can also install a cat door in an old closet, chest of drawers, or any other place that has enough space for a drawer and a cleanup access point.

Install curtains on a side table

If installing a cat door in a piece of old furniture isn’t your style, you can hide the tray behind curtains instead. This suggestion from Dimples and Tangles is to attach the curtains to the side table with hot glue and place the tray underneath. Or, there may be another place in your home where the curtain method would be useful, such as under the bathroom or kitchen sink .

Use a plastic storage bucket to make a high sided cat litter box.

Christy Linauer of Addicted 2 Decorating has created her own impromptu tray with high sides, a plastic storage container and a jigsaw. She cut out a front door for her cats, sanded the edges, and hid it in a closet. The high walls of this DIY litter box provide the added benefit of less litter being thrown around while the cats go about their business.

Rattan Chest Rework

This suggestion from Laura Bierek of Nocturnal Knits is to repurpose an IKEA rattan chest into an enclosed tray. You will need wire cutters to cut out the cat door on the side of the chest and then just place the box inside.
