Where Exactly Is Sports Gambling Allowed?

In 2018, the US Supreme Court overturned the federal ban on sports betting, leaving the rules and regulations on betting to the states. Since then, sports betting has spread across the country, but not in every state. Below is a list of where you can legally bet on the game and where you can’t.

States where sports gambling is allowed both online and offline

These states allow betting on sports events on retail gambling sites as well as online, with some special cases.

  • Arizona
  • Colorado
  • Connecticut
  • Delaware : In June 2021, betting shops began operating at three Delaware casinos. Mobile betting coming soon.
  • Illinois : It is illegal in Illinois to bet on the state’s varsity games.
  • Indiana
  • Iowa
  • Louisiana : Mobile sports betting is not offered in Louisiana, but it is legal. It is hoped that it will appear at the beginning of this year.
  • Maryland : Online betting is legal but not yet launched.
  • Michigan
  • Montana : Sports betting in Montana is regulated by the state lottery, so only its site can be used for betting.
  • Nevada
  • New Hampshire
  • New Jersey

  • Pennsylvania
  • Rhode Island : Personal betting is currently available at two casinos. Online gambling is legal but still on the way.
  • Tennessee : Tennessee is the only state with an online-only sports betting model, so there are no physical places to place bets.

  • Mississippi : Online betting in Mississippi is limited to casino bets.
  • Nebraska
  • New Mexico : New Mexico has no laws against sports betting, so one tribal casino has set up a betting shop. But this is, according to CBSSports , “not entirely legal, but not technically illegal either.”

Sports betting is prohibited in the following states. Many of these states are expected to pass legislation to change this law, but it is not known when or if it will be passed.

  • Oklahoma : Tribes that are allowed to take bets have not yet started operations.
  • Ohio . Ohio residents may have to wait until at least January 1, 2023 to bet on sports.
  • Nebraska : Sports betting is legal in Nebraska, but the rules have not yet been finalized so it may take some time before you can bet.

State where sports betting is in legal limbo

  • Florida : In Florida, sports betting was legalized and the Seminole Tribe launched an online sports betting operation on November 1, 2021, only to be stopped by a judge a few weeks later. Whether and when he will return depends on the court.
