How to Fix Large App Icons on Mac Dock

The docking station is one of the most distinctive features of macOS. It offers you an easy way to quickly launch your favorite applications without cluttering your desktop. However, the dock itself can be annoying if the icon sizes are not the same. If you find yourself looking at an extremely large app icon and (rightfully) find it annoying, here’s how to fix it so your dock looks nice and symmetrical again.

Where can I find macOS icons?

Before you can replace an icon on a Mac dock, you need to know where to find those icons, and the first call port is the app developer’s website. Most app developers provide a press kit containing the brand logo and app icon. You can use this to get started replacing an icon that looks out of place.

If you can’t find the app icon on the developer’s website, you might want to consider using a third-party website like MacOSIcons . There are over 10,000 app icons on this site, so you’ll probably find the one you want. When you download application icons from MacOSIcons, you will receive an ICNS file. It is a supported file format for application icons, along with JPEG and PNG.

Of course, no one will stop you if you want to create your own app icons. We’ll tell you everything you need to know about this shortly.

The right icon size for your Mac

While Apple encourages app developers to submit their icons in multiple sizes, we don’t need to follow this as we’re just going to replace a couple of icons on our computers. The aspect ratio is 1: 1, and the required icon sizes are 512×512 pixels for non-Retina displays and 1024×1024 pixels for Retina displays.

If you create your own application icons, you should create PNG files and stick to the following color spaces: sRGB (color) or Gray Gamma 2.2 (grayscale) according to Apple.

How to change app icon on Mac

To change the application icon, open Finder and go to the Applications folder – you will see this folder in the sidebar on the left. Select the application with the offending icon, right-click and select Get Info . Alternatively, you can select an application and use the keyboard shortcut Command + I.

A new window will open with more information about the application and a preview of its icon. Drag the new icon to the top of this window and place the new icon next to the application name in the Get Info window.

That’s it – the app icon should be pinned to the dock. If this does not change immediately, close the application and start it again.
