How to Hang Holiday Decor Without Destroying Your Home

Holiday decorations, from wreaths to garlands, inside and out, can be a problem, and they can damage your walls, siding, and doors with unnecessary (and permanent) fittings. Instead, here’s how easy it is to decorate without extra holes and permanent hooks, and how to better protect the jewelry itself from the elements.

Use detachable hooks.

Instead of using nails or permanent hooks that will leave holes in the wall, try a removable hook with Velcro . There are many shapes, sizes and styles for both indoor and outdoor use , with varying weight limits. If you find it difficult to place this decor in the right place, the adjustable hooks can be rearranged up to three times in the first 20 minutes to help you achieve the perfect placement.

Aside from sticky hooks, there are some clever ways to hang jewelry without poking holes in real life: you can get temporary brick hooks that are spring loaded and completely removable. And for a door wreath, consider mounting over a door hanger , which saves you the hassle of hanging a hook on the surface of the door.

Use a tie – everything

For railings, twigs, and posts, many people find zip ties or twist ties useful. If you are wrapping your subject with light or a garland (or both), it is best to use clean ties . They are easy to hide, you can tie multiple ties together for longer lengths, they are soft and non-scratching, easy to use and reusable. These zip ties can make installation and removal easier as they do not require tools and help prevent tangling.

Use fishing line

For Christmas trees, clean line can save lives. Create a stable indoor tree by stretching the line between the tree trunk and the detachable hook on the wall in at least two places, forming a triangle. For outdoor demonstration, creating guy lines with fishing line and tent stakes will help keep your decorations upright. Attach a fishing line to a stable point as high as possible on your decoration, then loop it to a tent pole in the ground a few feet from the base of your decor, tighten and secure. Repeat this step at least three times for a stable wind-resistant effect.

You can also use fishing line in a similar manner to stabilize wreaths by attaching the line to both sides of the wreath and attaching to the detachable street hook on each side of the wreath.

Protect your paint

To avoid damaging the paint, you can attach fabric , burlap, or felt to the back of wreaths and other decorative items before hanging them. This will prevent the sharp parts of the wreath from scratching and scuffing the paint, and will also reduce the transfer of sap to your surfaces. Use the transparent ties mentioned earlier to secure the fabric to make installation and removal easier. If you are using the ladder against the wall of the house, you can use pool foam noodles with a cut in the middle to prevent the ladder from scratching the paint.

Prevent water damage

To prevent the Christmas trees from leaking onto the floor, you can cover the tarp before installing the stand. Once your tree is up and the skirt is in place, cut the tarp off so that it is hidden under the skirt. Using a watering can or funnel to water the tree will make aiming easier and prevent spills. The tarp will also help catch the needles, making cleaning easier.

Stay safe

Remember that there is always a risk of fire with electric lighting. Be sure to check the packaging on your headlights to avoid overloading the circuits, and do not exceed the number of strings per outlet specified in the instructions. Check your cords for wear and always throw away any items with damaged wiring (or have them repaired by a professional). Do not use indoor lighting outdoors and always check if the plugs are tightly connected. Keep a fire extinguisher handy just in case so you can keep the fire on the hearth where it belongs and enjoy all the warmest news of the season.
