What’s New in Disney Plus December 2021
The weirdness of the canon franchise is that you have to combine the good with the bad. This means that Disney / Lucasfilm has spent most of the last decade working overtime to fix parts of the official Star Wars storyline that, well, don’t actually work – making them look better in hindsight. changing them into classy peacebuilding and character detail after the fact. Whether this works for you is a personal decision. Personally, I’m probably not going to watch six seasons of The Clone Wars just to ignore the narrative failures of the prequel trilogy, and I wouldn’t even think about The Rise of Skywalker . But I really appreciate how all of these supporting series serve as an apology to actors whose careers were in jeopardy: Temuera Morrison had to endure the humiliation of being cast in the worst prequel ever ( Attack of the Clones ), so the least they could do was take his 10 years of voice acting and then giving him his own streaming series on Disney +. I mean, probably Boba Fett’s Book (Dec 29) was not created just as guilty. actor, but it’s a nicer idea than Q4 Maximum Subscriber Retention or whatever. And of course, everyone seemed to love Morrison’s return to iconic armor in The Mandalorian Season 2. The trailer indicates that the spin-off will follow Fett, whose slow digestion for a thousand years has been greatly exaggerated as he attempts to organize an underworld on Tatooine about five years after General Leia strangled Jabba with his chains. It looks pretty slick, even if I could do without the sandy Star Wars series (so rude, so annoying).
Also in December, Disney’s streaming service will become a place (don’t go) to (theaters) to see Encanto , a new animated musical about a Colombian family all with magical powers – until a girl who is none is born. When her family’s forces begin to spiral out of control, you won’t be surprised to learn that she might actually be the one who can save them all. If the plot sounds familiar, the art style, which incorporates elements of Colombian culture and folk art, at least continues the megacorporation’s efforts to diversify its animation offerings. And Lin-Manuel Miranda handles music that is great for those who think MOANA ‘s soundtrack rules are (me).
That’s all for the rest of December, including a new animated adaptation of The Wimpy Kid ‘s Diary (December 3) and some interesting documentaries from National Geographic; one, Rescue (December 3), takes us back to a real-life rescue operation for those children trapped in a flooded mine in Thailand in 2018 (possibly the last time the whole world came together to feel good. anything).
