These PlayStation 5 Paid Clubs May Go to Hell

Although the PlayStation 5 has been out for a year, the Sony console is still very difficult to buy. This is partly due to supply chain problems and partly due to increased demand – both are understandable – but the third reason for shortages is an old problem: resellers.

To combat recalcitrant capitalists who use bots to hijack all available consoles and then expose them to insane markups, more and more retailers are favoring buyers who pay for this access. There are no good guys in this situation: Buy bots clearly suck, but retailers’ efforts to combat them are almost as bad.

While there are top players – PlayStation Direct , for example, does not charge any signup fees to be able to buy a PS5, limiting sales to one console per person and using your PSN ID to verify – more and more retailers are placing the PS5 over a paywall. Walmart, for example, offers exclusive shopping for Walmart Plus members. It costs about $ 100 a year and will allow you to shop online at discounts on Black Friday four hours before everyone else, and it also offers free shipping and other benefits. Best Buy releases select PlayStation 5 consoles exclusively for Total Tech members, who pay $ 200 a year for technical support and shipping.

How beneficial these programs as a whole, it depends on how often you make a purchase at the respective stores, but if you sign up just to buy a PlayStation 5, you are sending retailers reported that they can earn more money by making it … buying groceries is harder than easier. And that doesn’t even guarantee a console: you only pay for the ability to buy a console, like in the shittest lottery in history. Worst of all, bot buyers are probably not going to stop them anyway.

Paid access is almost as bad as bots

It remains to be seen how much these membership schemes will help consumers get the console of their choice. I’m sure this will make it more likely, but still: there is a ton of organic demand for consoles and little supply (if you believe what “they” say), so it’s a stroke of luck no matter what. With the PlayStation 5’s absolutely insane markup – the base console retails for $ 399 and eBay sells for around $ 650 with lots of stakes – it’s likely that the price point will be reached where bot shoppers would benefit from signing up for a $ 100 membership. … all day, even if many of them can’t buy consoles. It doesn’t look like the resale price is likely to drop before Christmas.

Don’t reward “clubs” with your money.

Even if signing up for a bunch of paid consoles increases the likelihood of getting a PS5 this year, can you really look in the mirror after taking part in this bullshit? Are you going to carry your little Best Buy card with you and tell yourself that their tech support is worth it? Maybe wear a shirt that says “another gear in the car” while you work.

Any spike in club membership profits that could be linked to the PlayStation 5 will only be part of the retailer’s profit projection and will drive them to create / fake PS6 shortages in 2029. Thus, you are essentially preventing the future – you from playing. Call of Duty: Tampa, Florida. (this will happen in 2025 and this is very bad).

God damn just live in the past

While I have never suggested anything more ridiculous than developing a hobby that does not involve giving money to large corporations, I still suggest that you wait. I don’t mean to wait until Christmas. I mean, wait for years .

Imagine if you completely ignored all the advances in video game technology since 2006 – you would be delighted to buy a PlayStation 3 or 4. You could get it for a very low price, and all the games would be very cheap too … plus, there are over 2,000 launch titles. Unless you’re an avid gamer (or your kids are young enough), buying old ones is really a great place to start.

The trick is to live a virtual past. (Why not take it a step further? Go to the library and read old microfiche newspapers. Call it “cool.” I’ll expand on these important money-saving video game ideas with a series of lectures and slideshows that will take place on tour. country in 2005. Thank you for your patronage.) (Seriously, fuck these paywalls.)
