Child Culture Guide for Adults: What Is an Immortal Snail?

This week, all Zoomers talk about the mysterious Undying Snail and / or sit at the feet of John Darniel of The Mountain Goats to soak up the wisdom of the Generation X poet-lo-fi laureate. They are an eclectic group.

What is the Undying Snail (and why does it haunt me)?

TikTok talks about the Immortal Snail. Where is it from? What does he want? And more importantly, how can this be stopped?

The Immortal Snail is a thought experiment that has lurked on the fringes of the pop culture realm since 2014, when the RoosterTeeth podcast asked, “You and the superintelligent snail get $ 1 million each, and you both become immortal. However, you will die if the snail touches you. He always knows where you are and slowly creeps towards you. What’s your plan? “

So the Snail has been around for a minute, but this week it is gaining traction on TikTok, where the hashtag Immortal Snail has amassed over 187 million video views that offer helpful hints , jokes, and sinister videos from the snail’s point of view. -view .

(Obviously, you put half of your money in a long-term investment, and the other half you use to build a salt house in the middle of a salt apartment, where you wait and gloat when all your enemies die of old age. After 4000 years, when the burden of Life becomes too great, you leave salt plain and greet the waiting Snail with your last words, “Hello old friend.”

Mountain goats are experiencing a viral moment

Today is my favorite day as I finally have a reason to write about both snails and the greatest band in music history: The Mountain Goats. A tough indie / lo-fi / folk punk / rock band go viral on TikTok , with 16 million views on a hashtag full of youngsters using their searing divorce epic No Children as background music in tons of videos. Children get tattoos and even dance to the dull, soul-destroying chorus of the song: “I’m drowning. There are no signs of land. You walk with me, hand in hand unloved. I hope you die. I hope we both die. “

The Mountain Goats is owned by 54-year-old singer, songwriter, and literary novelist John Darniel, whose viral response makes him a role model for all out-of-reach adults. “There is a certain joy in a kind of feeling that, well, there is something going on in the kids that I’m not going to fully understand , but I can just enjoy watching, ” Darniel told Vox . “I think people are scared of getting older and they’re afraid they’ll feel left out, but sometimes there’s a bit of buoyancy in this non-statutory capacity if you drive right.”

A special prop for the group’s hardcore followers who greet new fans with a refreshing lack of security .

Since the early 1990s, The Mountain Goats have released 20 studio albums and probably double as many EPs, unreleased compilations of tracks and other ephemeral stuff. They’re all great, but they’re intimidating, so here’s a link to my Introduction to The Mountain Goats playlist on Spotify if you want to be obsessed for life.

Warnings of the week

It is time to once again use the unpleasant experiences of young people as object lessons on what to avoid.

Do not do this:

TikTok star JinnKid accused of double murder

Ali Abulaban scored almost a million subscribers to its TikTok for his comedic video, but the 29-year-old man, known on the network as JinnKid, now do not laugh. He cools off in a San Diego prison on charges of murdering his wife Ana and her friend Rayburn Barron. Abulaban pleaded not guilty to the charges, which could lead to the death penalty.

On October 18, the couple broke up and Abulaban moved out of the apartment they shared. But he reportedly snuck back and installed a covert listening app on the couple’s five-year-old daughter’s iPad. A few hours later, after hearing his wife talking to another man, Abulaban entered the apartment and shot them both. Abulaban, still armed, took his daughter out of school and was arrested.

According to Abulaban’s cousin Louis Marinari, the social media prominence was partly to blame for the crime: “I definitely think it gave him strength. I really think it made him feel better than other people and that no one can touch him, ”Marinari said in an interview with NBC 7 in San Diego .

Viral Video of the Week: Lightyear Trailer

Tens of millions of fans have watched and shared ateaser trailer for the upcoming Pixar Lightyear movie since its release yesterday. The Lightyear, which chronicles the origins of Buzz Lightyear from Toy Story , is slated for release in the summer of 2022.

Leaving aside the question of why the toy could even have an origin story * other than I Was Made in a Factory, Lightyear’s trailer is stunning, promising a movie full of reckless space action with a lucid edge. Bonus points for using Bowie’s Star Man on the soundtrack. Obviously, sure, but just so good for this trailer.

* Yes, I know Lightyear is the movie that inspired Buzz Lightyear’s toy in the Toy Story universe ; Kidding.
