How to Force Restart or Use Recovery Mode on Your IPhone 13

Now that you have your new iPhone 13, it’s time to learn a few basics. We all know that even the latest and greatest hardware does not always work perfectly, so it is good to know not only how to turn it on and off, but also how to force restart it, how to enter and exit recovery mode, and even how to change the firmware to device if recovery mode does not work.

How to turn off (and turn on) your iPhone 13

It’s easy. To turn off your iPhone 13, go to Settings> General , scroll down and select Turn Off .

Alternatively, you can press and hold the Volume Down and Side buttons at the same time until three sliders appear on the screen, and then slide your finger across the “ slide to turn off ”. Likewise, with your iPhone 13 turned off, press and hold the side button until the Apple logo appears.

How to Force Restart iPhone 13

If your device is frozen, there is a quick way to force restart your iPhone 13 : press and release the volume up button, then press and release the volume down button, then press and hold the side button until the screen turns off. After a few seconds, the Apple logo will appear on the screen and your iPhone 13 will restart.

How to enter and exit recovery mode on iPhone 13

If when you turn on your iPhone 13 it freezes with the Apple logo on the screen (no progress bar), or if you see a red or blue screen, you may need to use recovery mode to restore your phone. … Recovery Mode allows you to connect a stuck iPhone to your computer to restore its software to a working state.

(Here, we remind you to back up your iPhone regularly. If recovery mode or other methods of restoring your iPhone don’t work, you may need to contact Apple Support for a replacement – in which case you will need to back up your lost data.)

To put iPhone 13 into recovery mode, connect it to your PC or Mac using a charger. If you are using a PC or Mac with macOS Mojave or earlier, you need to install iTunes; on a Mac with Catalina or newer macOS, you just need to keep the Finder open. When you connect iPhone 13 to your computer, a pop-up window may appear on your phone asking if you trust the computer. Tap Trust and enter your password if prompted.

With iPhone and computer connected, press the following keys on the iPhone one after the other: volume up, volume down, and hold the side button until you see the computer and cable on the phone screen. A pop-up window will appear on your computer asking if you want to update or restore your iPhone. Click ” Refresh” and wait for the device to update and reboot.

To manually exit recovery mode, press and hold the side button until the computer and cable icons disappear from your iPhone display.

What is DFU Mode and How to Enable or Disable It on iPhone 13

Device Firmware Update Mode – or DFU – allows you to change the firmware on your iPhone when your iPhone is locked and recovery mode is not working, possibly due to a faulty software update. If your device is under warranty or you have AppleCare, let Apple pick it up from here. But if that’s not an option, DFU mode is one way to get things working again.

Connect your iPhone to your computer following the same steps we described for recovery mode. Then press the volume up button and release it, press the volume down button and release it, and then press and hold the side button until the screen goes black. Continue to hold the side button and press the Volume Down button for five seconds. Release the side button and hold the volume button for 10 seconds. This should put your iPhone into DFU mode.

Your iPhone screen will remain dark and you will see a pop-up in Finder or iTunes on your computer that says iTunes has detected iPhone in recovery mode. You must restore this iPhone before it can be used with iTunes . Restore your iPhone and it will automatically restart after the process is complete.

If you change your mind, you can exit DFU mode by following the same keyboard shortcut you used to force restart.
