What’s New on HBO Max in October 2021

Denis Villeneuve’s adaptation of the legendary sci-fi epic Dune is finally hitting HBO Max this month, whether he likes it or not ( he doesn’t ).

I understand why this dude is nervous. Turning Dune into a film with a little more fidelity to the original Frank Herbert novel than a visually unique but narrative, well, let’s say, imperfect version of David Lynch was a lifelong dream for him , and he finally got it – but only halfway through. The film only adapts the first half of the sprawling romance, and if it flops in theaters (and there is plenty of evidence that this could be a pandemic or not; Villeneuve’s latest sci-fi blockbuster was, of course, Blade Runner 2049 , another costly attempt to restart an old franchise that didn’t make enough money to justify the cost of producing it), he may never get the second part. (Why didn’t Warner Bros. just let him film both parts at once, like Lord of the Rings ? Good question .) From all that said, you can understand why the director wants you to see his film on the big screen. Yes, he presented it as epic and epics deserve an epic canvas, but I saw Blade Runner 2049 on the back of an airplane and still found it visually and emotionally engaging. In fact, this is not the problem. He just wants to make his film, which means that his film has to make money. I really hope so, because I also want to see the rest of this story of religious fanaticism, political intrigue and giant space worms playing the screen, no matter how big. So I hope to see Dune in the theater. But we’re still in the midst of a pandemic, and the movie will still be available to stream on the same day – October. 22 – so watch it however you want. (Sorry Denis.) As if the biggest sci-fi movie of the year isn’t enough to justify your subscription this month, HBO / HBO Max has a ton of other great stuff coming up, including the season debut on October 17th. three from the series ” Legacy” (one of the brightest and most striking shows), the last season of Issa Rae’s Insecurity (October 24), the second season of the series ” We’re Here” without a script (October 11) and much more. See below for a list of everything on the way in October. Titles with (HBO) next to them are available to all HBO subscribers; everything else is exclusive to HBO Max.
