How to Make Suction Cups Stick Again

When they do their job right, the suckers are great. Extra storage space in the shower? Don’t mind if I do it. But sometimes the suction cups lose their ability to stick to the wall. No matter how hard you try to get them to stay in place, they slide across the tiles in your bathroom or kitchen window all the time, and that’s a problem. Fortunately, this can be fixed with a simple and quick hack. Here’s what you need to know.

How to use Vaseline to get your suction cups working again

While this hack is by no means new, it is gaining traction again thanks to (you guessed it) TikTok – in particular @alroessler . In the video, they are faced with a sink situation: the sponge holder with suction cups does not stick to the edge of the sink. But a little later, apply Vaseline to the bottom of the suction cups and the sponge holder will stay in place.

Other ways to make suction cups work again

In an article for Hunker, Kirsten Nunez shares several other ways to get the suction cups working again:

  • Make sure the surface is smooth and level like a mirror.
  • Remove lint and grease from both the surface and the suction cup.
  • Rinse the cup in warm water to soften it.
  • Press down on the suction cup from time to time to get rid of air pockets.
  • Make sure the temperature is above 40 degrees Fahrenheit.

Meanwhile, according to another article on Hunker (this article by Katie Adams), you can use a small amount of vegetable oil instead of petroleum jelly to keep the sucker sticking. Here’s how: “Apply the chosen substance around the perimeter of the cup to the side of the lip that adheres to the other surface,” she writes . “Use as little as possible, otherwise the cup may lose suction.”
