How to Finally Group Safari Tabs, Praise Be

At some point, everyone who uses the Internet suffers from tab fatigue. You can try managing them with different windows, but this has never been a great solution and they do not carry over between all of your devices. And while group tabs let you manage unorganized tabs, Safari users are out of luck. Until now, because you can finally group tabs in Safari on your iPhone, iPad and Mac.

With the iOS 15 , iPadOS 15, and macOS update, Monterey Safari is undergoing a redesign with a strong focus on tab groups. You can quickly create different groups of tabs, which are then synced across all your devices.

How to use tab groups on iPhone

On iPhone, the Tab Groups feature is hidden in the tab switcher. Click the tabs button (cascading squares icon) on the bottom toolbar to open the tab switcher.

Here you will find the new Tabs dropdown menu at the bottom. Select New Empty Tab Group to create a new group with no tabs. Or you can create a new tab group using all currently open tabs. Give the group a name and choose Save. You will now see the group under the “Tab Groups” section.

You can return to the Tab Groups page to switch to a different tab group or return to other open tabs. If you want to remove a group of tabs, click the Edit button, click the Menu button next to the tab group, and click the Remove button. After creating a tab group, you can open new tabs and continue browsing as usual.

If you’re in the open tabs section, adding a tab to a tab group is also easy. Just tap and hold on the address bar, select the Move to Tab Group option, and select the tab group. To open a link in a specific group of tabs, press and hold the link and use the same Move to Tab Group option.

How to use tab groups on iPad and Mac

With iPadOS 15, Safari on iPad is starting to move closer to Safari on Mac. There is now a brand new sidebar that also houses the Tab Groups feature.

The function of tab groups on iPad and Mac is basically the same, the only difference is that instead of clicking, you click. And instead of a touch and hold gesture, you use a right click.

On your iPad or Mac, open the Safari app and click the sidebar button to expand the sidebar.

Here you will see all open tabs under the Tabs section. Use the New Tab Group button at the top (it looks like two cascading squares with a plus sign) and select the New Empty Tab Group option to create a new tab group, or the New Tab Groups from Tabs option to convert all open tabs to the group of tabs. Give the tab group a name and click Save.

You can now switch to the sidebar tab group. When a tab group is open, you can click on the name in the toolbar to switch to another tab group, open tabs, or switch to private mode.

To move a tab to a tab group, press and hold the tab (right-click on a Mac) and select the Move to Tab Group option.

To remove a group tab, simply swipe left on the group tab name (right-click on a Mac), click the Delete button, and choose Delete from the pop-up to confirm.
