20 Best Long Films You Really Need to Watch

It seems like the running times of films are tending to increase in length, and even if the data doesn’t really support it , the recent super-long releases in major grossing franchises like Marvel and James Bond (the movies that are watched the most) at least mean that the bloat seems real. For some reason, these hugely popular TV shows feel the need to justify their existence by tying us to our places for more than two hours, while many of us might happily pay the same price for a movie that would give us hope to return home someday. see our dogs again.

However, the quality of a movie is not determined by its length. For every movie that is much longer than it needs to be, there is another that seems to be compressed because of its relatively shorter length. Some stories are just as effective when they take their time – either because they have so much to say and do that nothing seems in vain, or because we are allowed to enjoy an immersive world with interesting characters. As Roger Ebert once said , no good film is too long, and no bad film is short enough.

So here are some really great movies, each at least two and a half hours long (most of them much longer), and all of them also justify their watching time, usually making every second worthwhile.
