How to Use IOS 15 Separation Alerts so You Never Forget Your Phone Again

If you are like me, leaving the house is always at the last minute, when you are desperate to be on time, wherever you go. So things like keys, bags and even MacBooks are often forgotten, only remembered when it’s too late. If that’s true for you, you’ll want to take advantage of the new split alerts in iOS 15 to never stray too far from your items again.

Of course, split warnings are useful for more than just leaving objects behind you. If someone hacks your device, they can’t get too far unless your iPhone tells you to. This is a good first warning system for any situation where you are at odds with your business. And, since it works with Find My, you will be able to see where the device was last connected to the network.

Which devices support iOS 15 split alerts?

Apple doesn’t have a complete list of devices that work with this feature, but here’s a list of the ones it probably currently supports:

  • iPhone running iOS 15 or later
  • iPad running iPadOS 15 or later
  • Mac running macOS Monterey or later
  • Apple Watch running watchOS 8 or later
  • AirTags (no specific firmware version known at this time)
  • Find My supported accessories such as VanMoof S3 and X3 e-bikes, Belkin SOUNDFORM Freedom True Wireless headphones and Chipolo ONE Spot hidden object

How to set up split alerts on your iPhone

Split alerts are very easy to set up if you know where to look. To get started, open the Find Me app, then click Devices or Items, depending on the item for which you want to set up split alerts. Tap the device you want and scroll up the menu. If your device is compatible with this feature, you will see the option “Notify when left behind.” Tap it.

On the next page, you will see ” Notify when left behind .” Just tap the slider next to this option and the feature will be enabled. Click Finish to lock your settings. Now, when you leave the territory of that particular device, you will receive an alert on your iPhone with a warning about it.

You will also notice on this page the ” NOTIFY ME EXCEPT AT” option. This parameter allows you to specify specific locations for which Find My will not send separation alerts. For example, you don’t want your iPhone to yell at you every time you leave home without a bike with Find My. This is why you will likely see iOS recommending your home as a place to pick here.

To choose your own location, click New Location . By default, Find My will show your current location. To choose your own location, tap the search box at the top of this page, enter an address of your choice, then tap Search . When Find Me shows your location, you can fine-tune it by pressing and holding the red pin and dragging it to the desired location.

Alternatively, you can use the blue circle to increase the radius covered by this location; Find My will even tell you how many feet your radius is when you change it. If you prefer Find My to change the radius for you, you can select Small , Medium, or Large from the menu bar below and watch the radius change accordingly.
