The Matrix, with its bizarre, dynamic exploration of the nature of reality (and heavy doses of trans-allegory), has brought mind-blowing science fiction to the masses. In many ways, it was the perfect combination of mind and muscle: a thoughtful film open to a wide variety of interpretations, which also featured incredible and innovative action sequences that drew on old-school martial arts, pushing the boundaries of film technology around 1999.
The first two sequels were, by any measure, less successful in conveying their themes, but like anything that has been done by any Wachowski, remain addictive, albeit more confusing.The trailer for the upcoming sequel : The Matrix Resurrection s (with Lana Wachowski playing the solo) just dropped out and heck it doesn’t look good:
Time will tell. But for now, just because The Matrix is one of the most popular films in the intellectual philosophical science fiction genre doesn’t mean it’s the only film worth watching.
