How to Speed up Your Old Android Phone

If your Android phone scans multiple times a day, you might think it’s time to update it. But before you finish buying a new one – and assuming you’ve already tried a basic restart – there are a few more steps you can take to reduce or eliminate those annoying slowdowns.

Update the software on your Android phone

Updates often improve performance, security, and bug fixes. These are all very important and can speed up your smartphone. Go to Settings> System Update and click Download and Install .

Refresh stuck apps to fix random slowdowns

You may experience slowdowns in your most used applications. For example, Facebook or Instagram might be slow, but the rest of your phone is running at an acceptable speed. In this case, open the Play Store and update the problematic apps first. (Click on your profile picture in the upper right corner of the Play Store, select “ Manage apps and device” and go to the “ Manage .” Updates can fix issues that are causing various Android applications to slow down.

Disable animation

Especially the old phone may not be able to handle Android animations anymore. If this is you, consider turning off animations on your Android phone . To do this, you need to first enable Developer Mode: go to Settings> About Phone and scroll down. Touching the build number seven times will enable developer mode on your Android phone.

Go to Settings> System> Developer Options and scroll down to the Picture section. Tap Window Animation Scale and select Animation Off . Then select the same option under Transition Animation Scale and Animation Duration Scale .

Your phone won’t have the same chic user interface anymore, but it might run faster, which is worth the tradeoff.

Limit apps that run in the background

Most Android phones have the ability to freeze apps running in the background, so they don’t affect your phone’s performance. However, if you are experiencing slowdowns, you might want to consider limiting the number of apps that can run in the background. Once again, you will need to enable developer mode to get your job done. (See instructions above.)

Now go to Settings> System> Developer Options and go to the Applications section. Select Background Process Limit and choose the one that works best for you. You can stop any application running in the background, or allow one to four applications to run when you are not actively using them.

While this can improve the performance of your phone, please note that it will negatively impact battery life because your smartphone will have to launch most applications every time you open them, which takes up more system resources and drains battery life as a result. work. …

Free up storage space

Sometimes, too many apps and too much stored data can slow down your phone as well. Freeing up space can significantly improve its performance. If your phone lags, check your app library and uninstall any apps you no longer use. Press and hold an application icon and select ” Remove” to remove it. (Remember to disconnect your accounts from the app before uninstalling it.)

If you’re having trouble finding unused apps, go to Settings> Storage> Manage Storage . This will redirect you to the Google Files app, where you will see a card that says Remove Unused Apps . Click Select Apps , select the apps you want to get rid of, and then click Uninstall .

You might also note that apps like Netflix allow you to store downloaded files on a microSD card (if your phone has one). Freeing up internal storage goes a long way in making your device run faster.

While you’re at it, clear the app cache as well.

Factory settings of the device

If all else fails, you can try a factory reset to erase all data and restore it to factory settings. However, this will remove everything from the smartphone, so this is a last resort. Make sure your Android backups are working properly and back up your device to avoid data loss.

Then go to Settings> System> Advanced Options> Erase All Data (Factory Reset) and follow the onscreen instructions.
