How to Enable Background Sounds in IOS 15 (and Why You Need It)

There are times when background sounds can help you fall asleep or calm you down – like ocean sounds or even static noise. There are many websites and iPhone apps that can help you play a wide variety of background sounds, but if you’re using iOS 15 or iPadOS 15, you can simply use the built-in background sounds feature on your iPhone or iPad.

How to play background sounds from settings

Background sounds is an accessibility feature. You can find it in the Settings app by going to Accessibility > Audio / Video > Background Sounds .

There is no play function in background sounds. It’s just a switch. While you are here, we recommend that you turn off the “Use when playing media” option so that background sounds are not billed with media.

How to play background sounds from Control Center

Playing background sounds from Control Center is much faster, but you need to add a hearing control first. To do this, open the ” Settings ” application and go to the ” Control Center ” section. Scroll down and tap the green plus sign next to the Hearing control to add it to the Control Center.

Now swipe down from the top-right corner of your iPhone or iPad to open Control Center. Tap the new hearing of the control (it looks like an ear icon), and then touch “Background sounds” in the pop-up window or at the bottom of the screen.

The background sounds feature is now enabled and you will hear sounds. You can click the Background Sounds button to change the sound and choose between balanced noise, bright noise, dark noise, ocean, rain, and torrent. Use the slider to change the volume and you’re done.

When you’re done, return to this screen and click the blue Background Sounds button at the bottom of the screen to stop the background sounds playing.

I want more? Take a look at these apps with alternative background sounds

Once you start using the background sounds feature, you may need more – for example, the ability to mix different sounds, or just more sounds in general. This is where you should explore a wide range of background audio apps, and we’ll start with two great options.

Dark Noise : This is arguably the best background noise app. It costs $ 9.99 but you get custom background audio without ads. There are 50 unique sounds, shortcut automation, widget support, and multiple theme options.

Relax Melodies : This is a good free alternative. The app lets you mix over 200 sounds, brain waves and music.
