How to Turn Your Hot Tub Into a Refreshing Cool Plunge Pool

Hot tubs are good when it’s cold outside, but when the temperature and humidity outside starts to rise, stewing in boiling hot water may not seem very appealing. Fortunately, there is something you can do about it. In an article for Hunker, Michelle Miley explains how to chill and then maintain a cooling hot tub – or better said, your new cool plunge pool. Here’s what you need to know.

How to cool a jacuzzi

Transforming a hot tub into a refreshing plunge pool includes the following , Miley said :

  1. Reduce heat by setting thermostat 85 degrees or lower, or turning off heat completely.
  2. Find a way to ventilate the hot tub. If it’s not in direct sunlight, just open the top. If so, place pool noodles or a tennis ball under each corner of the mat to allow the heat to escape.
  3. Either wait for the water temperature to cool down on its own, or if you need to speed up the process, drain some of the water and replace it with cold water from a garden hose.
  4. If you are adding cool water from a hose, adjust the amount of chemicals in the spa.
  5. Turn on the jets in the bathtub to bring cool air into the water and reduce the temperature faster. It will run faster when the sun goes down.

How to keep your hot tub cool in summer

Once the hot tub reaches your desired temperature, you’ll want to leave it that way. Miley suggests filling a few empty milk jugs or other plastic containers with water and freezing them, then placing them in the hot tub if needed, like giant ice cubes.

Another option, she said, is to buy a hot bath chiller, which most manufacturers now offer as an option. But if you’re not trying to reach temperatures cold enough to be therapeutic (as athletes do), you can probably keep your bath cool enough without a refrigerator, Miley adds .

The good news is hot tub insulation works both ways: the water stays cool and cool in the summer, just as it does warm in the winter. This is especially effective if you are using the lid when not using your new diving pool.
