Your Cold Coffee Needs Some Citrus Soda

This is the time of summer when the heat can go from barely bearable to unbearably hot, and there is no respite. While most of my regular food and drink can be swapped out for lighter ones that are more suitable for summer, daily coffee is a quandary.

I am a long-time coffee lover, giving up is not an option, but at this time of year even black iced coffee seems too heavy for the heat. The solution, I just discovered, is Orange Coffee Soda , a beverage created at Steadfast Coffee in Nashville, Tennessee.

Citrus Fruits Brighten Iced Coffee

Orange coffee soda brightens iced coffees, adding citrus sweetness and light carbonation, giving it all the coffee pleasure (and caffeine) and lightness that a hot summer day demands.

While Steadfast Coffee does sell a canned version of its orange coffee soda , it may not be available in your area. Fortunately, creating your own requires nothing more than opening a few cans and adding an orange peel – and that simplicity is appreciated when the heat roasts your brain to the point where even the smallest tasks seem daunting.

How to make orange coffee soda

To make orange coffee soda, you need a cold coffee, a citrus soda like Orangina or an orange Italian carbonated drink, and orange peel. I would recommend using a cold broth from a light roast, which pairs well with citrus fruits, but also contains more caffeine than a dark roast.

The recipe calls for a 1: 1 mixing of cold coffee and lemon soda, which you pour over with ice, and then add a slice of orange peel. When it comes to your coffee to soda ratio, don’t assume you have to be precise – you can tweak this to suit your preference. The more citrus soda you add, the lighter and more effervescent it becomes. There are no right or wrong answers here.

When I drink it in the morning, I want the coffee to be stronger, so I mix it in a 1: 1 ratio; During the day, when I want to enjoy coffee without much pleasure, I will make a cold drink in a 1: 2 ratio with citrus soda, which somehow tastes like Tootsie Pop with orange flavor.

In addition to coffee orange soda, we wrote about the different variations of cold coffee, that you also might like, including carbonated cold drinks made from different kinds of carbonated drinks , coffee egg cream and coffee lemonade .

Keep in mind that cold brew contains a lot of caffeine, so it is best to stir it with light hands. The Cointreau shot is also a great addition.
