How to Force Restart Any IPhone or IPad

If your iPhone or iPad is frozen or does not recognize the touchscreen, a forced restart may be required to get it working again. The forced restart method allows you to shut down and restart your iPhone without using the touch screen.

While this is not required very often, there will be times when you need to force restart your device – in fact, I recently had to use this method myself. In my case, I was connecting my iPhone to my Mac when the phone was stuck in the “Trust this computer” pop-up window. The pop-up froze, and none of the usual defrosting tricks helped . (I tried to make a phone call, but even the incoming call interface showed up under the popup and I was unable to answer the call.)

That left me with only one choice (other than waiting for the iPhone battery to drain, which I didn’t have the patience for): force restart. Fortunately, this is quick and easy to do.

Force restart iPhone and iPad without Home button

If your iPhone or iPad has Face ID (and therefore doesn’t have a Home button), here’s how you can get it to reboot quickly: press the volume up button and release it, press the volume down button and release it, and finally press and hold the power button . button . You can release the power button when the screen turns off. The Apple logo will appear on your screen and your iPhone or iPad will restart.

The same steps can also force restart an iPhone 8 or iPhone 8 Plus. Simply press the zoom button, and hold the volume button side until these phones will not be restarted.

Force restart iPhone 7, iPhone 7 Plus, or iPod touch (7th generation)

The force restart key combination is slightly different for iPhone 7, 7 Plus, and iPod touch. If you have one of these devices, you can force restart it by pressing and holding the Side (or Top) and Volume Down buttons until the Apple logo appears on the screen.

Force restart iPad using the Home button, iPhone 6s or earlier, or iPod touch (6th generation)

If you have an iPad with a Home button, iPhone 6s (or older), or iPod touch (6th generation), you can force restart it quickly if needed. Just press and hold the Home button along with the side (or top) button until the Apple logo appears on the screen.
