This week’s guide is a snapshot of a sleepy week in youth pop culture. Nothing special happened, just a great new show about an all-Muslim all-female punk band, a debate about popcorn and an Xbox-branded mini fridge.
Streaming this week: It’s Lady Parts
I don’t know if this is a trend or what, but lately, female punk rock bands have appeared all over the place. There’s the stunning The Linda Lindas , the less-steep Tramp Stamps , and now an all-Muslim band in Peacock’s We Are Lady Parts .
Six episodes of the British film take us into the Muslim culture and the culture of punk rock and break the expectations and stereotypes of both. The parents of the main character Amina do not want their daughter to quit punk rock and school in order to get married. The Parts’ mysterious manager Momtaz wears a full nijab with studded bracelets and works in a lingerie store. The band’s songs that actually sound like punk rock and have titles such as “Ain’t No One Gonna Honor Kill My Sister But Me”. Are you butter the popcorn the wrong way?
Have you sprinkled popcorn the wrong way all these years in the cinema? Colleen Lepp at TikToker thinks so, and she has a solution . The problem, Lepp says, is that the oil only spreads over the top of the corn, leaving most of the kernels dry. Solution: Put a straw in the bucket and send the oil to the bottom.
More than six million people have viewed Colleen’s corn tortilla, and commentators have praised it or pointed out that placing a jet of molten butter in straw can be a mess. I love this video because it shows that people are allowed to go back to the movies and start stupid popcorn arguments again.
Hashtag of the week: # 2018vs2021
Only young people will make # 2018vs2021 a fashionable hashtag. The point of this is to imagine how you are fighting yourself in 2018 in 2021 by comparing pictures. Personally, I’m a little fatter and slightly bald than I was a few years ago, but basically the same plain old white dude. But children are really different! They have a different idea of how time goes by – for me 2018 just happened, but the time between 16 and 19 was a lifetime.
Either way, watch the video and take yourself to a time when three years seemed like an eternity and you were sure / deluded enough to think that someone would care about the changes you are going through.
This Week In Video Games: It’s E3 Week … Just Doesn’t Look Like E3 Week
It’s E3 week, but you might not even know it. Since large gatherings are still banned, the video game world cannot get together in a convention center to showcase new games and products, so the hype is not what it used to be. That said, of course, there have been some interesting announcements of upcoming games and products delivered via video streaming.
- Nintendo showed off the first footage of the next Zelda game . The sequel to Breath of the Wild is slated for release in 2022.
- Square Enix has announced therelease of the game Guardians of the Galaxy on 26 October.
- The sequel to my favorite 2019 game Plague Tale: Innocence is coming soon.Plague Tale: Requiem will be released in 2022.
- The biggest video game announcement at E3 is by far the Xbox Mini-Fridge . Playing on the blocky look and slogan of its new console, Microsoft promises gamers “the world’s most powerful mini-refrigerator” with “Xbox Velocity cooling architecture” and no doubt holds all the Monster energy drink you need. Also: this is not a joke. I mean, it ‘s kind of a joke, but you can actually buy it this holiday season.
Viral Video of the Week: Lumberjack
This week’s viral video was made by rapper / virtuoso Tyler, The Creator, a musician whose work I don’t understand. I am far beyond his goal, but I recognize a genius when I hear him. In the videoLUMBERJACK , whichlasts just over a minute, Tylerreads rap about … something (I’m not quite sure what exactly) on provocative images that look like super-8 film and portray … something.
A true product of the online world, Tyler has been creating art that is unique and not aimed at me since MySpace, and I’m happy he’s doing what he’s doing and I’m happy millions are still sharing and enjoying his videos. Tyler, the Creator, is proof that a ruthless search for likes and reposts in the online world doesn’t always lead to gaudy, horrible art with the lowest common denominator; sometimes it leads to an unexplained toughness like the Lumberjack.
