Where Can You Go to Asia Right Now?

If you are thinking of traveling to Asia soon, unfortunately your options are limited. Most of Southeast Asia has seen a surge in COVID cases recently, prompting new restrictions in many countries. However, there are several countries open to American travelers, here’s where you can go:

Bali

As one of the most popular tourist destinations in Indonesia, Bali may soon welcome foreign tourists again. Details are sketchy, but it looks like the country will be open for international travel sometime in July . You will want to check the Indonesian Embassy website later when more details become available.

Bangladesh

The US State Department does not recommend that Americans travel to the country, although it is possible . The United States is considered a Group C country, which means that all travelers over ten years of age must provide proof of a negative PCR test done within 72 hours of travel upon arrival in Bangladesh, followed by a 14-day quarantine. The country is also just emerging from isolation, so you should avoid traveling there if possible.

Japan

You might be wondering if Japan will be open to American tourists for the Olympics, and well … it doesn’t look good. With the rise in COVID cases, the Japanese government has expanded its national declaration of emergency to cover a significant portion of the country’s travel destinations. As a result, you can only travel there if necessary, as the country’s borders are closed to tourists.

Maldives

American tourists are allowed to enter the country, but you will need a negative PCR certificate upon arrival. There are also health screening procedures at airports and other points of entry – if the test is positive, you will be placed in isolation for 14 days at your expense.

Nepal

The Department of State does not recommend traveling to Nepal, but the country is currently open to a limited number of tourists. However, it is difficult : all foreigners need to obtain a tourist entry visa from the diplomatic mission of Nepal abroad or get the approval of their embassy. PCR testing is required within 72 hours of arrival, as well as a hotel reservation, a completed travel form, proof of travel insurance, and a 10-day quarantine.

Pakistan

The country is technically open to travel , although the State Department does not recommend traveling to Pakistan due to “terrorism and sectarian violence.” A visa is required to enter, you will need to register on the app, and all arriving travelers must undergo a rapid antigen test upon arrival at the airport. If your COVID test is negative, passengers will be forced to quarantine for 10 days. If you test positive, you will be quarantined at government-designated locations where you will need to pay for your accommodation.

South Korea

Travel to South Korea is open to US citizens, but there is a mandatory 14-day quarantine (at a government agency for $ 100-150 per night) regardless of vaccination status, which will almost certainly discourage most people from traveling there. You will need to sign a release form confirming that you agree to these terms, plus you will need to take a PCR test within 72 hours of departure. More information can be found here .

Thailand

After closing borders for tourism for more than a year, it looks like Thailand will allow non- quarantine travel to Phuket for vaccinated tourists starting July 1, provided they come from low-risk countries (including the United States). … Tourists will need to prove they have been fully vaccinated, although this is not required for children under six years of age. PCR tests are also required upon arrival and on the fifth day of travel. You will need to stay at your destination for at least 14 days before traveling elsewhere in Thailand.
